Evaluation on Home Visiting Oral Health Program for the Elderly in Rural Community

Abstract


Objective: The study was carried out to evaluate the performance of the home visiting oral health program of the elderly inrural community. One hundred twelve subjects, who were low income class, disabled and had chronic diseases, living intheir own houses, institutions for the aged in two counties, Gyeongbuk Province were selected. And oral examination andface-to-face interview questionnaire survey for the subjects were implemented.

Methods: The various indexes relating to oral health such as patient hygiene performance, calculus index, community periodontalindex, tongue plague index, halitosis, saliva secretion, denture hygiene index were compared before and after thehome visiting oral health program. The appraisal of the home visiting oral health program was done after 6 months of theprogram implementation.

Results: The results showed that there was positive change in denture hygiene index, halitosis patient hygiene performance,tooth behavior such as brushing method, brushing times, while there was no positive change in calculus index, communityperiodontal treatment index, saliva secretion.

Conclusion: Thus, various measures including provision of transportation for the visiting to medical facilities in order to improvethe accessibility of the oral health services for the disabled elderly with low income, chronic diseases should beneeded.
